RIVERSCOPE: workshop 2: Earth Pigments

Join the Living Museum of Logan and artist Kuweni Dias Mendis in a hands-on exploration of earth pigments- from gathering soil to transforming it into paint. Participants will learn to process local earth into pigment and use the resulting natural paints on both fabric and paper.
Activities include:
• Gathering Earth Pigments
Learn best practices for ethically and safely collecting soil. You’ll be guided in how to document your process through field notes, sketches, and reflective journaling, deepening your connection to place.
• Processing Soil into Paint
Using traditional cooking tools and slow, mindful techniques, we’ll pound, sieve, and blend soil into usable pigments. This tactile process invites you to connect with texture, colour, and material in a grounded, sensory way.
• Painting with Natural Brushes
With the freshly made paints, you’ll create works on fabric and paper using your hands. This final step brings together your unique pigment and mark-making language rooted in the land.
Riverscope, is a contemporary, place-based multidisciplinary arts project led by artist Kuweni Dias Mendis, that explores themes of belonging, migrant identity, and regeneration. From April to July, Kuweni will be in residence at the Kingston Butter Factory, engaging with the Logan community through a series of creative and sensory experiences.
