RIVERSCOPE: workshop 4: Wild Stitching

Join the Living Museum of Logan and artist Kuweni Dias Mendis in this workshop where you will learn how to create a small indigo vat and dye your own threads. We will then explore “wild stitching” — a free-form, meditative embroidery practice guided by the rhythm of your own body. This intuitive process allows for deep listening, inner reflection, and spontaneous expression through thread.
Activities include:
• Introduction to Indigo
We will begin with a discussion on the history, power, and symbolism of indigo as a plant pigment. Kuweni will share her personal journey with indigo and how it weaves into her current body of work for the Riverscope exhibition.
• Indigo Vat Demonstration
Participants will observe the step-by-step process of making a natural indigo vat and learn how to dye thread using this ancient technique.
• Wild Stitching Practice
Using the indigo-dyed threads, we will engage in a meditative stitching session — creating abstract works on fabric through slow, intentional movement. This is a space to let go of perfection, trust your intuition, and connect deeply to your own creative flow.
Riverscope, is a contemporary, place-based multidisciplinary arts project led by artist Kuweni Dias Mendis, that explores themes of belonging, migrant identity, and regeneration. From April to July, Kuweni will be in residence at the Kingston Butter Factory, engaging with the Logan community through a series of creative and sensory experiences.
