Celebrating connection, creativity, and conservation

Where do I belong? is a vibrant celebration of art, nature, and community, inviting everyone to imagine a future where Australia’s birdlife thrives.

In the lead up to the exhibition at Logan Art Gallery from Saturday 20 June 2026, there are many hands-on opportunities for residents to create some works by participating in the artist residency projects.

The Where do I belong? exhibition uses contemporary art to explore the beauty and vulnerability of our native birds, while sparking hope and action for a more sustainable world.

Bringing together Queensland and nationally based artists, environmental experts, First Nations voices, youth, and disability advocates from the region, this collaborative project speaks to the power of creativity to unite and uplift. With engaging content and inclusive public programs designed especially for ages 5 to 30, Where do I belong? is accessible to all and encourages every visitor to reflect, connect, and contribute.

The exhibition culminates in the Art and Nature Symposium on Saturday 22 August 2026, a dynamic gathering to share ideas, celebrate community, and promote positive environmental action.

Come be inspired. Discover your place in the story. Help shape a future where every bird and every person belongs.

Artist in Residence: Mary Elizabeth Barron

As part of her residency, Mary Elizabeth Barron will lead a series of vibrant, hands-on community workshops across Logan Libraries, Logan Art Gallery, and the Living Museum of Logan. Participants will transform reused soft plastics into beautifully crafted individual feathers, each one a unique expression of creativity and sustainability.

These feathers will come together in a stunning collaborative artwork: a single, giant feather assembled by the artist herself. This powerful symbol of unity and environmental consciousness will be installed on the façade of Logan Art Gallery, becoming a striking visual centrepiece for the Where do I belong? exhibition.

Artist in Residence: Louise Wheatley

During her residency, artist Louise Wheatley will venture into Logan’s wetlands, parks, and urban landscapes to capture the vibrant sights and sounds of our region’s birdlife. Using these evocative video and audio recordings, she will create a captivating sound installation that runs throughout the Where do I belong? exhibition and visual content for the Birds of Australia STORYBOX. Louise’s work will forge an inspiring connection between visitors, Logan Art Gallery, the Logan Entertainment Centre, and the birds that bring our city to life. Audiences will be invited to experience Logan from a fresh, immersive, and poetic perspective.

Edgy and Hedgy mentorship with Bowerbird Collective

This project centres young voices through a creative mentorship with Bowerbird Collective, led by emerging songwriters and performers Edgy and Hedgy. The duo will compose the original music and libretto and perform live alongside up to eight Logan-based musicians, all actively involved in the creative and recording process.

The performance will feature during the ‘Up Late’ event within the Where Do I Belong? exhibition at Logan Art Gallery on 16 July 2026.

Edgy and Hedgy, sibling duo Jasmine (18) and Taylor (15) Wheatley, sit within the target demographic, bringing authentic peer perspectives shaped by contemporary music, online culture, and social trends today.

Mentorship support from Anthony Albrecht and Simone Slattery of Bowerbird Collective includes three one-hour Zoom sessions guiding emerging artists through development process. This approach builds skills, confidence, and creative momentum, empowering young musicians in Logan to collaborate, be heard, and see themselves reflected in a major public cultural event.

This project is supported by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Arts Showcase Program and the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
