Artist in Residence: Mary Elizabeth Barron
Mary Elizabeth Barron frequently works with recycled materials in her practice, with single-use plastic packaging often featuring in her work. So prevalent in everyday life, this lightweight material can easily enter the natural environment and be carried long distances by the wind, much like a feather. As a result, birds often ingest plastic waste, which can fill their stomachs without providing nutrition, leading to starvation.
As part of her residency, Barron led a series of hands-on community workshops across Logan Libraries, Logan Art Gallery and the Living Museum of Logan. Participants transformed discarded soft plastics into individual feathers, each reflecting personal creativity while highlighting the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The hundreds of feathers created through these workshops were brought together in a large-scale collaborative artwork, assembled by the artist into a single giant feather. Installed on the façade of Logan Art Gallery, the work became a striking visual centrepiece of the Where do I belong? exhibition and a symbol of connection, belonging and collective action.
The artwork was made using plastic packaging collected by Logan City Council staff, while the feather components were created through community workshops that brought people together to forge new connections and foster inclusion. The project also encouraged awareness of environmental issues and the importance of protecting Logan’s natural environment for birds and for future generations.
