Art 101 | Night Jarring (lantern making) with Pamela See
Visitors to and residents of Logan City are invited to contribute to the Where do I belong? exhibition through creating a set of lanterns. The title of the participatory artwork reflects upon one nocturnal avian species that his endemic to the region: the White Throated Nightjar.
“Jar” in the bird’s name refers to the discomfort some people may experience when hearing their piercing calls at night. However for the installation, their likeness and those of their counterparts, will be inserted into preservation jars and illuminated. Tawny Frogmouths and Bush-Stone Curlews are two more examples.
In addition to the night birds, participants may also choose to illustrate threats to their wellbeing from feral cats to vehicle strikes. Through engaging papercutting, the series of lanterns will convey these environmental concerns with an aesthetic that may be likened to illuminated dioramas or shadow puppetry. The lanterns will be kept by the gallery and displayed at our UPLATE event on Thurs 16 July 2026. Lanterns can be collected after this event.
