Our key venues for arts and culture offer year-round cultural experiences.
Young Artists Studio is a new after-school arts program designed for young people aged 12-16 years who want to build creative skills, explore new ideas, and develop their artistic voice in a supportive studio environment.
Across four sessions, participants will experiment with drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, and visual journaling while learning about a range of artistic approaches and contemporary art concepts. The program encourages observation, creativity, confidence, and self-expression, providing young artists with opportunities to develop both technical skills and their own unique style.
By the end of the program, participants will have created a collection of original artworks and developed a personal art journal documenting their creative journey
Young Artists Studio is ideal for creative young people who are curious, imaginative, and interested in exploring new ways of making and thinking about art.
Program Outline
Week 1: Portraits & Identity
Working from mirrors and artist examples, students will explore facial proportions, observation, and expression through self-portrait activities. They will experiment with graphite, ink, and colour while considering how artists represent personality, mood, and identity.
Week 2: Drawing Your World – Visual Journaling
Students will receive their own art journal and discover how artists use sketchbooks to document ideas, observations, and inspiration. Through drawing everyday objects, places, and moments, they will develop observation skills while exploring composition, mark-making, and watercolour techniques.
Week 3: From Realism to Abstraction
Using drawings and observations created in previous sessions, students will experiment with transforming realistic subjects into abstract artworks. Through collage, colour exploration, layering, repetition, and image manipulation, they will discover how artists move beyond representation to explore.
Week 4: Colour, Music & Expression
Students will investigate the relationship between sound, emotion, and visual art. Responding to a variety of music styles, they will create expressive artworks using paint, pastel, and mixed media, exploring how colour, rhythm, movement, and mark-making can communicate feeling and experience.
