Pussy said to the Owl, “You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married!”

Cats have a significant impact on wildlife across Australia. Outdoor cats, both feral and pet, are estimated to kill around 377 million birds, 1,144 million mammals and 649 million reptiles each year. They are highly effective hunters, commonly targeting small, ground dwelling birds. Overall, cats are estimated to kill around 1 million birds per day in Australia.

The tawny frogmouth was crowned Australia’s 2025 Bird of the Year. Sadly, the species is affected by climate change, habitat loss, vehicle collisions, domestic animals, invasive species and poisoning. One concern is the use of strong rat poisons called second generation anticoagulant rodenticides. BirdLife Australia is calling for these poisons to be removed from public shelves and restricted to trained, licensed professionals. These products are being phased out but are still available in some supermarkets and online during the transition period.

Logan artists Nicola Hooper and Christina Lowry, along with Sharon McKenzie and Migaloo Press Artists Collective are aware that much of Australia’s rich biodiversity is found exclusively on this continent. Australia has one of the highest extinction rates in the world, partly due to introduced plants and animals since European settlement. In their artworks they hope to inspire people to learn more about our vulnerable native animals and endeavour to do more to protect them.
