Stitching stories with Kyra Mancktelow

Over the course of Thread: Connecting stories and community, artist Kyra Mancktelow will be working with a group of local Indigenous and culturally diverse community members to create a possum skin cloak at Logan Art Gallery, a living work that gathers and holds stories of local significance.
As the cloak nears completion, attention turns to the careful marking and painting of the inner surfaces of the skins using ochre. These gestures bring to life the designs that have been burnt into the cloak, illuminating the stories, connections and cultural knowledge carried by each mark.
On Friday 22 May from 1.00–3.00pm, you are invited to sit with Kyra and her collaborators in the gallery space to witness this process of completion, share stories, and reflect on the exhibition’s themes.
Feel free to bring along a small sewing, stitching or jewellery-making project of your own to work on as you take part in this program.
Thread: Connecting stories and community was co-designed and co-curated by the National Portrait Gallery, Logan Art Gallery and local artists and creatives as a pilot project to develop new ways of working with communities across Australia. The exhibition is supported by the Australian Government.
