Inheritance
Thursday 28 May, 2026
A new work to align with National Reconciliation Week
A bold and deeply moving theatrical experience, Inheritance is a poetic and musical journey into identity, resilience, and the sacred bonds that connect us across time. Created and performed by acclaimed First Nations artist Toni Janke, this live music show weaves original songs, storytelling, and lived experience into a tapestry of profound cultural memory and spiritual reclamation. At its heart lies a question that resonates with all of us: What do we truly inherit – and what will we choose to pass on? Framed around the metaphor of a “precious jewel” gifted through generations, Inheritance explores the intangible treasures of ancestry – our stories, values, and worldviews – and how they shape our understanding of self, belonging, and purpose. Drawing from her cultural heritage and upbringing, Toni invites audiences into an intimate conversation that transcends the stage, illuminating universal truths about love, loss, and the power of reconnection. This is not just a performance; it is a soul-to-soul exchange – one that transforms, heals, and inspires.

The Scene Project
Thursday 10 – Friday 11 September, 2026
Now in its 12th year, The Scene Project is a statewide participatory project that involves secondary schools (Years 7-12) in the creative process of performance, from rehearsal through to presentation. It acknowledges young people and teachers as artists and encourages the making, presenting, viewing and responding to live performance in a professional space and manner. The Scene Project prioritises collaboration, professional development of teachers and young people, and enhancing existing curriculum or co-curricular activity in schools.
The Process
Each year Queensland Theatre Company commissions a play specifically for The Scene Project and its participants.
During Term 1, teachers engage in a professional development opportunity designed to build and strengthen the teacher toolkit to deliver and create for the project.
Over Term 2, the secondary school participants are tasked with creating their own unique version of the work of up to 15 minutes.
Outcome Days are held in performing arts centres across Queensland in Term 3, where participants then share their work with each other, before watching a team of professional actors from Queensland Theatre Company perform a full version of the play under the same parameters.
Find out more at Queensland Theatre
Registrations for The Scene Project 2026 are now open and will be closing Friday 21 November, or earlier if registrations are full.
